There are actually three main monkey forests in Bali: the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud (most famous), Sangeh Monkey Forest and Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest.

Sangeh Monkey Forest is a lesser-known sanctuary nestled in the heart of Bali, Indonesia. Unlike the more famous Ubud Monkey Forest, Sangeh offers a quieter experience with its own unique charm.

The Sangeh Monkey Forest is a small forested area, which is located in the village of Sangeh in Badung Regency. It is renowned for its sacred nutmeg (Pala) trees and a population of Balinese long-tailed macaques.

You can explore the sanctuary on well-maintained pathways and encounter the playful and curious monkeys that inhabit the area.

PICKING TIP

  • If you want to avoid the crowds and tourists and have the time, this is the place to go. It's beautiful and with plenty of monkeys around.
  • Usually local guides / photographers will offer their services at the entrance. If you do not want to take the monkey-selfie, you just say no and keep on walking.
  • Do NOT bring any plastic bottles, food and plastic bags. If you have a backpack, remove any loosely attached items.
