Our 5 must-see places in Tasmania

When people ask Chrissi about her favorite place of our world trip so far she will immediately tell you Tasmania!

To be honest after traveling New Zealand we did not really know if it would be worth it to go to Tasmania because we read many articles that said it would be very similar.

But we are so glad we did eventually decide on visiting this beautiful part of Australia with its untouched nature, abundant wildlife, cozy cabin stays and so much more!

The must-do thing when visiting Tasmania

Cradle Mountain is a national park in Tasmania that stands out due to it’s exceptional natural beauty and can be visited all year around.

You will need to park your car, get a pass for the national park and take the shuttle bus to the start of all the different hikes.

We highly recommend to hike up to Marion’s Lookout Link Track first, then continue on the Overland Track, the Wombat Pool Track, the Lake Lilla Track and finish your hike at Ronny’s Creek.

PICKING TIP

  • Pack a raincoat and warm clothes as the weather can change quickly.
  • End your hiking day with visiting Ronny’s Creek boardwalk in the late afternoon and you will highly be likely to see a great amount of wombats feeding on the grass next to the boardwalk.
  • Stay at this affordable secret remote cabin in the woods with an outdoor wood-fire bathtub under the Tasmanian sky.

Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park is located on the east coast of Tasmania and is a must visit when visiting Tasmania.

It offers great walks, we would recommend to hike up to Wineglass Bay Lookout first and then continue with the loop track that leads you down to Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach and back to the carpark.

PICKING TIP

  • Keep your eyes open for Bennett's wallabies along the walking track
  • Stay at Bicheno the night before and visit in the morning. It is about half an hour drive.

Have you heard of Maria Island? It is Chrissi's favorite place on earth! Check out our Instagram video for an impression.

Maria Island is an island located in the Tasman Sea just one short 30min ferry ride from Triabunna. This makes it an ideal destination for a day trip but you can also stay overnight.

It is a place of untouched nature and definitely one of the world’s best places to spot wombats in the wild. There are also no cars on the island, we would recommend to bring your own bike or rent one directly on the island.

You can also do the Bishop and Clerk track for a spectacular view. If you are interested to learn more about Tasmania’s colonial heritage then check out Darlington (small settlement on the island). Also visit the famous Painted Cliffs, a coastal attraction but keep in mind to go at low tide.

PICKING TIP

  • Bring enough water and food, because there are no shops on the island.
  • The best time to spot wildlife is early in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Watch out for snakes in the bushes, Chrissi almost stepped on one

Bruny Island is a great destination for a day trip from Hobart. It is only accessible by ferry, but you can go with your own car.

You will be stunned by Bruny Island’s beauty of nature. Also keep your eyes open for the rare albino wallabies, they are often seen around Adventure Bay. Check our Instagram video about our favorite animal encounters in Tasmania!

PICKING TIP

  • We recommend to do a day trip from Hobart.
  • After the ferry ride, visit the Neck Game Reserve lookout
  • Then do a hike, we especially liked the Fluted Cape Walk, and maybe see an albino wallaby
  • To finish off the day we recommend to have a cheese platter at the cheese company on the island or grab yourself some drive-through oysters. Be careful of the closing times though!

One of Tasmania’s oldest national parks

Mount Field National Park is located in the south-west of Tasmania and is renowned for its lush green temperate eucalyptus rainforest with some of the world’s tallest trees.

An alpine region with walking trails is also part of the park but only accessible depending on the weather conditions.

Russell Falls is an impressive cascade waterfall and should not be missed when visiting. Also check out the Tall Trees Walk.

PICKING TIP

How to spend a perfect day at Mount Field National Park:

  • Check out the visitor center first, then head to Russell Falls, it is just a short 15min stroll. If you have more time, do the whole Three Falls Circuit Walk where you will see 2 other nice waterfalls besides Russell Falls.
  • There is also an alpine area centered on Lake Dobson. You need to drive 16 kilometers on a gravel road where you can enjoy a stunning alpine mountain scenery. Definitely ask in the visitor center about the weather conditions before driving up.
  • Ultimate tip: Stay overnight and do a night walk. It was one of our best experiences in Tasmania. You will encounter a great amount of wildlife, such as wallabies, possums, quolls and platypus.
  • We recommend either staying at the camping ground directly in the National Park or at Russell Falls Holiday Cottages (like we did). The cottages are super cozy and are located next to the entrance of Mount Field National Park. Book in advance!
